Leslie L. Sersland, age 73, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday morning, August 18, 2018 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Dr. Jennifer Edinger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Full Military Honors by Decorah’s Veterans and Military Organizations, and U.S. Army personnel.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, one hour before the service, at the church.

Leslie LaVerne Sersland was born in Decorah, IA on August 20, 1944 to Rudolph and Grace (Monserud) Sersland. He was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church where he remained a lifelong member. Leslie attended the rural Hyde No. 6 School in Frankville Township. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1962. In 1969, he graduated from Northeast Iowa Technical School, earning a diploma in welding.

Leslie enlisted in the United States Armed Forces and served from November 5, 1969 through May 12, 1972. He completed the UH-1 Helicopter Maintenance Course and graduated from the U.S. Transportation School in April of 1970 at Ft. Eustis, Virginia. He was stationed one year at an airbase at Ben Hoi, Vietnam, then at Ft. Hood, Texas before his discharge. Les received a “Quilt of Valor” in July of 2017 in honor of his military service.

In his lifetime Leslie has been a truck driver, a farmer, and did custom combining. Before and after his military service he was employed at Deco Products in Decorah. Beginning in July 1998 Leslie was employed as a machine operator at Northern Engraving in Waukon, IA until his retirement. Les enjoyed going to auctions in the area. He was a member of the Northeast Iowa Sportsman’s Club and was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed all types of fishing and hunting, especially bowhunting deer and turkey. He was an excellent marksman in archery, and spent many hours target practicing. He had a special fondness for dogs and owned several in his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by his father Rudolph on February 13, 1983 and his mother Grace on May 4, 2011.

Leslie is survived by two sisters, Colleen (David) Bigler of Decorah and Eunice (Jim) Veeder of Decorah; two brothers, Daniel Sersland of Pompano Beach, FL and Michael Sersland of Decorah; and several nieces and nephews.
