Ilse Johanna Meyer (Petersen) passed from this life Feb, 13, 2018, with loved ones around her in Springfield, Mo. She was born in Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Germany, July 13, 1933, and came to the United States in 1950.

Her beloved husband of 63 years, Edward Cecil Meyer, followed her in death March 21, 2018, also in Springfield, Mo. He was born in Decorah April 9, 1926.

Memorial service is Aug. 18, at Calmar Lutheran Church. Coffee and cookies will be served from 9 to 11 am. The service is from 11 a.m. to noon; and a lunch of tomato sandwiches, BLTs and sweet corn on the cob will follow.

Ilse was a proud graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and Ohio State University where she received her PhD in 1974. Ilse subsequently taught German, linguistics, German to chemistry students and world literature at the Pontifical College Josephinum and Ohio Dominican University. Edward received a PhD from Boston University in 1967 after receiving degrees from Cornell College, Drew University Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School. Edward served Methodist churches in Iowa and Massachusetts before accepting in 1961 a position as professor of homiletics (preaching) at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, from which he retired in 1986. He then served as pastor in Boone until 1991 and then in Calmar until 1995.

Edward and Ilse were loving, patient and inspiring parents to Edith (David Helms), Judith (Bob Pavlowsky), Elizabeth and Philip. Their absence also is deeply felt by their grandchildren: Emily and Abigail Helms; Caroline, Johanna and Aaron Pavlowsky; Jakob Meyer and Felicia, Matthew and Ryan Meyer. Yumi Tokonami, Ursula and Sabine Kroeber are also grieving the loss of Edward and Ilse.

Edward and Ilse lived full and complete lives devoted to each other, their family and the communities where they lived and moved and had their being. They strove to make the world a better place through their service to others, in their pursuit of truth and social justice and in understanding their places in the world and lives they were given to experience.
