OBITUARY.
KRATZ.
Philip Kratz was born at Frammsheim Hessen, Germany, January 19th, 1849, and died at his home four miles south of Cresco, Oct 2nd, 1900, at 12:15 a. m., bringing his life to the age of 51 years 8 months and 13 days.
The immediate cause of his death was heart trouble, of which he was a patient sufferer for several years. At times his suffering was intense but he bore it with much patience, always showing forth a Christ-like spirit. His end was not unexpected to him nor his loved ones. He was fully resigned to his God and ready to meet Him.
Deceased was united in marriage to Mary Cawelti May 30th, 1877, near North Washington, la. This union was blessed with six children, five boys and one girl; one boy preceeding the father to the better world.
Philip Kratz emigrated to America with his parents when but four years old, spending his boyhood days in the state of Indiana. From thence he came with his parents to Iowa and grew to manhood near Ridgeway. He leaves a wife, five children, an aged mother, four brothers, four sisters and many other relatives and friends who mourn their loss.
Mr. Kratz was honored and respected by all who knew him; was neighborly in every respect and always ready to lend a helping hand. His policy was “a friend in need, a friend indeed.” He held at different times offices in the township and county. He was converted to God in early life and joined the Evangelical Association of which he was a faithful member until death. For many years he was re-elected superintendent of the Sunday School, also as exhorter.
Through all the changing scenes of life he remained true to God and loyal to the church of his choice. His seat in the house of worship is vacant; his voice forever silenced. By his death his companion loses a kind, loving and devoted husband; his children a wise counselor, and the church a devout member, but our untimely loss is heaven’s eternal gain.Funeral services were held in the Kratz church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by. Rev. Buente, of Cresco, preached in German and Rev. Lang, of Charles City, in English. Mr. Kratz was a charter member of Cresco Camp, M. W. A. –Ridgeway Record.
