David Brown, one of the early settlers of Orleans township, died Saturday last and was laid to rest in Oak Lawn on Monday. He was highly respected by all who knew him, had a large acquaintance through the county. He was quite advanced in years and had been in failing health for some years. We are without data for such mention as his life with us merits.

David A. Brown.
(From Cresco Republican)
The death of David A. Brown, which occured{sic} Saturday evening, March 31st, at his home in Orleans township, removed from this life one of Winneshiek countys most honorable, straight forward, and highly respected citizens. Mr. Brown was born in Franklin county, Mass., Sept, 7, 1819, was married January 22, 1845, to Miss Cleora A. Towne.
They moved to Orleans Twp., Winnesheik{sic} county in the spring of 1862. His widow servives{sic} him, also two children, Mrs. W. K. Barker, of Cresco, and C. C. Brown, of Orleans township.
David A. Brown loved his fellow men without professing it and talking about it. He valued the friendship and good will of men above all mercenary values, and lie would let them take the bargains while he held to the richer jewels of an undiminished brotherhood; and lie was prospered thereby. Mr. Brown had no enemies. He had nothing of the cold and calculating design which sees selfish re-j turn in all things. His life was open, simple, honest, truthful.
Humble in spirit, willing to do a labor of love to his fellows at all times, he rejoiced and evinced his nobility in purity of living, love and affection for the dear ones of his household and unbiased fairness and charity towards all his fellow men. A good man has gone home.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. H. Hendricks at the Morgan church Monday afternoon. Interment was in Oak Lawn Cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: His gravestone shows the year of birth as 1818.
