Howard Benzing, age 91, of Decorah, Iowa, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2018 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel in Calmar, IA with Rev. Ron Pederson presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar City Cemetery with full military rites.
Visitation will be after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Friday morning.
Howard Ralph Logan Benzing was born on July 11, 1926 the son of Gust and Sophie (Klutzbach) Benzing in Farmersburg, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Farmersburg. Howard moved to Calmar with his family when he was a child. He enlisted in the Navy at age seventeen and served in the Pacific in WWII on the USS LSM 24. When the war ended he was on the crew of the USS Henderson that went to the South Pole with Admiral Byrd. Howard returned to Calmar and married Marion Rasmusen on January 16, 1949 at the Calmar Lutheran Church. They were blessed with four sons: Ralph, Steven, Dennis and Thomas. Howard worked many different jobs over the years including the railroad, Nehi Pop, Bucheits Produce, farming, Eastern Airlines and eventually Calmar Manufacturing where he worked for thirty-two years. In his retirement, Howard loved making furniture for his home and many beautiful pieces for his children and grandchildren. He also made the cross for Trinity Lutheran in Calmar and the Altar for King of Grace in Waukon. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar. One thing the family could always count on was that whenever Howard made a decision, it was always with his family in mind. He will be missed, God bless his memory.
Howard is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years: Marion. Sons: Steven (Carol) Benzing; Dennis (Kristi) Benzing and Tom (Chris) Benzing. Daughter-in-law: Karla Benzing. Grandchildren: Larry Benzing, Tony Benzing, Beth (Ryan) Tennison, Aaron (Harriett) Benzing, Jonathan (Sheena) Benzing, Erika (friend, Shelby Lensing) Benzing, Ryan Benzing, Kara (Josh) Cocheran, Vicki (Brian) Losen, Michael (Clare) Benzing, Mitchell (Heather) Benzing, Nicole (friend, Mike Schissel) Benzing, Heather (Dusty) Leonard, Jason (D’Shawn) Benzing, Melissa (Manuel) Cortez and Isaac Benzing. Twenty-seven great grandchildren and seven great great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents: Gust and Sophie (Klutzbach) Benzing. Son: Ralph Benzing. Great granddaughter: Faith Anne Benzing. Brother: Victor (Orma) Benzing. Sister: Roma (Irvin) Parker. Nephew: Wayne Benzing. Father and mother-in-law: Emil and Myrtle Rasmusen. Sister-in-law: Dorothy (Frank) Sanders.
