Services held for Clarence Hertges
Funeral services for Clarence Hertges were held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 4 at the Assumption.,Worship Center in Cresco with Rev. Linus E. Rasing officiating; Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Michael Hertges, Michael Hunter, Thomas Sundry, Robert Hertges, Randall Hunter, and Steven Finholt. Conway Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Clarence, 87, died Friday, February 1, 2002 at his home of natural causes after a brief illness.
Clarence F. Hertges was born March 3, 1914 in Military Township near Ossian, the son of Michael and Antonetta (Zweibohmer) Hertges. He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Francis De Sales Church in Ossian where he attended school and rural schools.
Clarence was a veteran of World War II where he served in the American invasion of the Philippines, Leyte and Luzon in the 42nd Mortar Company from 1942-1945 as PVC.
On June 5, 1950 he married Harriet Schmauss Hunter. They farmed near Decorah until 1961 when the family moved to Cresco, where he served on the city police force until retiring.
Survivors include: Delores Klever of Independence, Elsie Sanderson of Waukon, and Kenneth Hunter of Marion; 20 grandchildren; 34 greatgrandchildren; one brother: Leonard of Freeport; and three sisters: Florence Hawkins of Cedar Rapids, Dorothy Barnes of Cresco, and Gladys Wolfe of Decorah.
Clarence was preceded in death by his wife Harriet; one step daughter; one great-granddaughter; four brothers: Nick, Greg, Ralph, and Donald; and three sisters: Mayme Klee, Hilda Sundry, and Marcelite Bucheit.
