Funeral services are scheduled for today (Wednesday), July 17, for a Decorah teenager who died as a result of drowning in the Vernon Springs mill pond south of Cresco.
Cory A. Hageman, 17, died Friday, July 12, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester from complications of the drowning that took place on Monday, July 8.
Hageman and several friends were attempting to swim across the mill pond from the Howard County park on the south shore to the Cresco Country Club. His friends summoned help when Hageman disappeared and a number of golfers, including off-duty Cresco firemen, responded. CRP was performed and Hageman was taken to the Regional Health Services Hospital in Cresco before being air lifted to St. Mary's where he remained in serious condition.
Hageman, born Dec. 6, 1984 in El Salvador the son of Larry and Jerilyn Hageman, was a Decorah High School student. He worked at McDonald’s in Decorah for more than three years.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Krista Hageman at home; brothers Michael and Kyle, both at home; and his grandparents, Hazel Stortz of Decorah and Eugene and Jeanne Hageman of Decorah.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Robert Stortz and paternal grandmother, Patricia Hageman.
Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Benedict's Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Schluter-Balik Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
