Verna Girlene Sampson, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died Friday, February 16, 2018 at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Burr Oak Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, one hour before the services, at the Burr Oak Lutheran Church.

Verna Girlene Sampson was born August 20, 1932 at Bluffton Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa to Howard Bertis and Pearl Henrietta (Blaess) Walter. Verna spent her grade school years at the Burr Oak #8 one room school. She graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1950. During her High School years she worked at the Smith Memorial Hospital as an aide and after graduation worked at K & S Super Valu in Decorah as a cashier.
On November 6, 1951, she was united in marriage to Durwin Sampson in Calmar, Iowa. After the birth of her daughter Jacquelyn Sampson on July 2, 1971, the family moved from Dixon, IL to Evansville, IN where Verna took a position with Kmart as a fashion accessories District Manager. In the early 1980’s Verna transferred to San Antonio, TX and became manager of the Builders Square Store. She worked until 2013 ending her career at Lowes in San Antonio.

Verna enjoyed her family, friends and being on the go. For many years Texas was her home, but she really still had a lot of Iowa farm girl in her and was able to come back and spend the rest of her days with old friends and family.

She is survived by two sisters, Darlene (Donald) Richards and Ferneva Brimacomb; two brothers, Erlin (Wanda) Walter and Wayne (Margaret) Walter; a granddaughter, Kasey DuPont; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Pearl Walter; a daughter, Jacquelyn DuPont; two brothers, Dean and Leonard Walter; and a brother-in-law, Robert Brimacomb.
