Thomas Monroe

Funeral services for Thomas Monroe, 89, were held Friday, May 10, 1985 at Castalia, Rev. H. W. Wolfgram officiated. The organist was Dorothy Wolfgram. Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery at Castalia.

Thomas Franklin Monroe, son of Franklin and Mathilda (Dowd) Monroe, was born June 4, 1895, south of Castalia. He died May 8 at the Good Samaritan Center in Postville. Tom was baptized and confirmed November 1, 1925 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville and attended the Bloomfield District #10 school near Castalia.

Mr. Monroe was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Castalia.

November 9, 1921 he was married to Ella Schroeder at the St. Paul parsonage in Postville. They were parents of three children. They lived in the Castalia area their entire life. June 19, 1981 Tom became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ella, who died August 21, 1968, a brother, A. Clark Monroe and a granddaughter, Julie Monroe.

Surviving are two sons, Merle and Lloyd, a daughter, Vila Mae (Mrs. Harvey Reinhardt) all of Castalia, 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, a step granddaughter, a brother, Henry Monroe (Sr.) and his wife, Nettie of Castalia and a sister-in-law, Jessye Schroeder of Postville.

Honorary casket bearers were Earl Gilster, Greg Bodensteiner, Eldo Schutte, Duane Meyer, "Bill" Buddenberg, Albert Nesvik and Leon Blumhagen.

Casket bearers were Harold Hageman, Alvin Hageman, Stephen Hageman, Dennis Anfinson, Mark Waterman and Kenneth Nesvik.
