Doris Cole, age 85, of Decorah, IA, died on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at the Barthell O.E.S Home in Decorah, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 22, 2018, at the Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago Street, Decorah, IA, with Rev. Phillip Gibbs presiding. Burial will be in the St. Benedict Cemetery in Decorah.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the Schluter-Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Ave, in Decorah and also after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday morning.

Doris Elaine (Cashman) Cole was born on January 6, 1933, the daughter of Leo and Alice (McAreavy) Cashman in Ryan, Iowa. She graduated from Mt. Mercy Junior College in Cedar Rapids and Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque. She received a Bachelor of Science from Loras College in Dubuque and additional course work at the University of Minnesota. Doris married Darrel W. Kester on November 12, 1955. Together they had four children: Stephen, Daniel, David and Darlene. Darrell died on December 31, 1978. Doris married Harry (Shafe) Cole at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Decorah on October 29, 1983. Harry died on May 18, 2009. Doris worked as a Nurse Educator at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque and twenty-five years at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar. She was a member of St. Benedicts Parish for fifty years. Doris was a past member and President of the Parish Council, past President and Vice President of the Rosary Society, Vice President of the Catholic Daughters of America and member of the Dubuque Archdiocesan Parish Council. Very dear to Doris was the Parish Nursing Program. This program came to be when Doris, with Father Gary Kapfl’s support, sought funds from the Archdiocese to start a Parish Nurse program in 1995 and continued to be the volunteer Parish Nurse for ten years. She also volunteered as nurse and coach at St. Benedict School when her children were students. Her passions were her Catholic Faith and caring for her family, nursing and caring for people. Doris enjoyed any activity her children and grandchildren were in. She also enjoyed spending time with her friends, playing cards, walking her dogs and doing crossword puzzles. Doris was proud of her Irish heritage, including her pilgrimages to Ireland.

Doris is survived by her children: Stephen (Ann) Kester, Grafton, WI; Daniel (Jami) Kester, Grain Valley, MO; David Kester, Decorah, IA and Darlene (Paul) Woodhouse, Decorah, IA. Grandchildren: Aaron and Katherine Kester, Shaina Boller and Ryan Kester, Leo and Ming Kester, Alicia (Alex) DeFrance and Josh Woodhouse. Great-grandsons: Truman and Grant Boller. Brother: Don Cashman, Manchester, IA. Daughter-in-law: Pam Kester.

Doris was preceded in death by her husbands: Darrell Kester and Harry Cole; parents: Leo and Alice (McAreavy) Cashman. Siblings: Joe Cashman and brother and sister in infancy.
