Mrs. Emma M. Hanson, wife of Martin Hanson, living a mile and a half north of town, died Monday morning after a brief and painless illness. Thursday last she accompanied her husband to town, and on their return proceeded as far as the house when she returned to the buggy to hunt for a package that was missing. She stooped down to look under the vehicle, when the horse jumped and startled her so that she lost her balance and fell on one knee. She did not feel that she was injured, particularly, at the time, but went to her room and lay down. Friday morning she did not feel able to rise and Saturday about noon, became unconscious remaining in that condition until death resulted a little before seven o’clock Monday morning. Drs. Stevens and Hoeg were called to attend her and both diagnosed the injuries as a strain of the spinal cord affecting the brain.
Mrs. Hanson was born in Christiania, Norway, and was seventy-four years old Jan. 8th, last. She and her husband have resided in Winnesheik county for over forty years. Seven children of a family of eleven survive her, among them Charles Hanson and Mrs. Amelia Vick, of Decorah, Mrs. Lewis Larson, of Canoe, and Frank Hanson, who resides at home. The funeral was held yesterday morning.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows Anne Marie Hanson who was born Jan. 8, 1825 and died Aug. 5, 1901, was married to Hans Martin Hanson and is buried in Lutheran Decorah Cemetery. The dates agree with the above except the age is off by two years.
