The funeral of Mr. Joseph Mc¬Laughlin, another of the oldest residents of Winnesheik county, was held from the M. E. church, at Burr Oak, on Monday last, April 12th, Rev. Joel Hilburn of the M. E. church of that place officiating. Mr. McLaughlin was born on the l0th of March, 1809, in Westmorland county, Pennsylvania. He died at his residence in the village of Burr Oak, April 9th, at the ripe old age of 88 years and 24 days. He was married to Miss Rachel McGary in June, 1831, from which marriage eleven children have been the issue; six of whom survive: W. E., of Wildomar, California, “Sam,” of Burr Oak, Mrs. J. J. Fessenden, of Cresco, Mrs. Margaret Ervin, of Ft. Pierre, S. D., Mrs. J. H. Porter and Mrs. Robert Townsend of Burr Oak. Deceased had been a man of exceptionally good health during his long life, hut old ago had told upon him, and for the past two years he had been slowly failing. The end came after an illness of about two weeks’ duration Mr. McLaughlin came west in 1856, settling for about a year in Illinois, after which he came to this county, settling upon a farm about four miles northwest of the village of Burr Oak, where he has continuously resided, until the spring of ‘95, when on account of failing health he concluded to quit the farm and bought the home in the village where he has lived since until at the time of his death. Deceased has been a life-long member of the Presbyterian church, having joined with the church of that denomination at Polk Run, Penn., early in life, and was a regular communicant of that church, until coming west, (there being no church of their own denomination in this community,) since which time Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin have been regular attendants and sympathizers with the M. E. churches at Elliota and Burr Oak. Mr. and Mrs. McLaughlin have lived together over the space of almost sixty-six years, a remarkable record and one scarcely ever excelled in human life. Mr. McLaughlin was a man kind and affectionate in his home, correct in his habits, honest in his dealings with his fellowmen, compassionate toward the faults of others, kind toward all. He exemplified the principles of the Great Teacher in his dealings, and the story of his life attests the sincerity of his religion. He will be missed by a large circle of friends and neighbors, who had learned to love and respect him through long acquaintance and association. To the surviving widow and family, this community extends its heartfelt sympathy in this hour of their bereavement and loss.
