Zachary Kent Afseth, 62 of rural Harmony, MN passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at his home surrounded by his family.

Zach was born on June 9, 1948 in Decorah, IA to Milo and Phyllis (Rasmussen) Afseth. He was lovingly raised by his parents along with his two siblings in Harmony. He graduated from Harmony High School in 1966. Following his high school graduation he attended and graduated from St. Paul Barber College. He then worked as a barber in Rochester, MN until he entered the United States Army in 1969. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division. Zach was Honorably Discharged in 1975. While serving he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal. Following his discharge Zach lived and worked various places until he settled in Harmony. On April 16, 1977 he married Mary Jane Knowlton. Together they raised three children, Heidi, Brent and Ryan. Zach had a zest for life and enjoyed going to work every day. Zach's most recent employment with Pace International offered him many opportunities to travel abroad and make long lasting relationships.

Zach enjoyed spending time with his family above all else. His Granddaughters were the light of his life. He was also an avid outdoorsmen with a great passion for hunting and fishing. Zach loved spending time with people that shared the same love and respect for the outdoors. In recent years Zach enjoyed fishing Walleye tournaments throughout the Upper Midwest.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary Jane (Janey) of rural Harmony, MN, Heidi Knepper of Fountain, MN, Brent (Brenda) of rural Preston, MN, Ryan of Preston, MN, 3 Granddaughters, Hayley Larson, Hope Knepper and Marissa Afseth, 2 sisters Toni (Jack) Matson of Cranberry Township, PA, and Roxye Afseth of Jefferson, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew.

Cemetery:
Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.

Visitation:
Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony, MN on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and also one hour prior to services at the church.

Service:
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, MN.
