Elmer Evenson, 80, longtime area resident, dies

Elmer Orin Evenson, 80, a retired Decorah farmer, died Thursday, Nov. 27 at the Eastern Star Home of a stroke.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. at First Lutheran Church. Pastor Paul H. Christenson conducted the service with organist Yvonne Kuhlman accompanying the congregation.

Burial was at the Lutheran Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Hildor Olson, Thomas Benson, Milton . Hanson, Lloyd Vine, Gordon MacMasters and Lewellyn Storlie. Honorary pallbearers were Theodore Gjere, Harold Martinson, Ervin Peterson, Lawrence Ruen, Truman Hove, Melvin Hattlestad and members of the I.O.O.F. Lodge. Steine’s Funeral Home was In charge of arrangements.

Elmer Evenson was born Jan. 27, 1900 in Winneshiek County to Henry S. and Mary (Kvale) Evenson. He attended rural schools and Luther Academy of Albert Lea. Minn. He was married Sept. 17, 1925 to Mabel Hattlestad at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. He always farmed in Winneshiek County and was a member of First Lutheran Church and I.O.O.F.

He is survived by his wife, Mabel; two brothers, Erwin of Rochester and Richard of Waterloo; and three sisters, Mrs. Ingabelle Longran, Huron, S.D.; Mrs. Melvin (Hilda Marie) Kasak, Sonora, Calif., and Mrs. William (Florence) Robinson, Albert Lea, Minn.
