Jean Shirley Sampson

Jean Shirley Sampson, 83, passed away Dec. 26, 2004 in the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center at La Crosse, Wis.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. in the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church in Frankville.

The Reverend James Walker officiated.

The organist was Joann Martins.

Casketbearers were Karsten Foels, Loren Brandt, David Schwinefus, Lindy Frey, Darrel Crawford, and Chris Crawford.

Burial was in the Frankville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Jean Shirley (Crawford) Sampson was born Aug. 7, 1921, on the family farm in Frankville to Lynn Barlow Crawford and Ruth M (Marston) Crawford.

She attended the Frankville School, and graduated from Postville High School in 1939. She then attended AIB in Des Moines for a short time.

She was offered a job at the ASCS office in Decorah, which she accepted and was employed there for 25 years.

She was married to Roger Leland Sampson Sept. 13, 1942 in the Frankville Community Presbyterian Church. To this union two children were born: Shirley and Sharon.

She was a member of P.E.O. for 59 years and has served in all of its offices. She was also a member of the Rebecca Lodge and a Winneshiek County 4-H leader for many years.

Jean Shirley Sampson also had many hobbies, including reading, cross-stitching, baking, playing the piano, and working in her flower garden. She especially enjoyed looking out the picture window of her home to observe the birds that came to the feeders.

Following an accident, she was a resident of the Charter House in Rochester from 2000 to 2002. She became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Postville in 2002. She participated in most of the activities and became president of the resident’s council there.

She was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church in Frankville and served as an Elder, church treasurer, and church historian. She participated in the church’s women’s group, and had served as UPW president. She also played the organ part time and sang for many church functions.

She was active and well known in the Frankville community and had kept a history of the community, the church, and the Frankville Stone School.

Survivors include two daughters: Shirley Foels, Postville and Sharon Strait, Hartland, Wis.; two grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Jeanne Crawford, Whittier, Calif.

Jean Shirley Sampson was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roger Leland Sampson, a brother Thomas Jasper Crawford, and a son-in-law Harlan Dean Foels.
