AMES — Charles F. Haberly, 64, Ames, a longtime former New Hampton resident, died of cancer Tuesday, April 11 at his home.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 14 at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the church.

The body was cremated.

Charles F. Haberly was born in Decorah and lived in New Hampton until attending Iowa State University, where he received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1965. He then worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids until returning to New Hampton in 1968 to run the family agri-business. He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Chuck moved to Wisconsin in 1974 and built a home on Lake Kegonsa near Madison. He was an active supporter of the environmental clean up of the lake and served three terms as a Supervisor for the town of Pleasant Springs, WI. Under his leadership the lake abandoned its aging septic system and installed the sewer system, which today is largely responsible for the lake's improved water quality. He was a charter member of the Friends of Lake Kegonsa Society (FOLKS), enjoyed the annual flotilla and was involved in the efforts to improve fish habitat on the lake. Chuck was the Fixed Income Investment Portfolio Manager with American Family Insurance Group in Madison, WI from 1972 until his retirement in 1994. He then returned to Ames to reside.

Surviving are his wife, Karen; two sons, Carl, Memphis, TN and Jeff, Franksville, WI; a sister, Janet Wilson, Ponte Vedra, FL; many extended family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Homeward Hospice House of Ames or Bethesda Lutheran Church.
