In Memoriam.
Another one of the early pioneers whose name and works are associated with the early settlement and development of this vicinity, has gone to her well earned rest.
Helen M. Ashley, wife of Carlos C. Ashley, died at the home of her son in Albion township, March 28th. She had reached the ripe old age of 90 years and has survived her husband 11 years. She leaves two sons and two daughters to continue a little while longer the journey of life with only the memory of mother to cheer them. The funeral was held at the Ashley church Monday, March 30th, Rev. S. H. Mitchell of Cresco conducting the services.
Helen Messenger was born in Pompey, Onnodaga county, New York, September 7th 1805. Se was married to Carlos C. Ashley in 1829, living in New York until 1857, when they came west, stopping in Fox Lake, Wisconsin, two years. In 1869 they moved to Howard county where she had lived until her husband's death, since then living with her children here and in Illinois, but finally dying in her old home and was laid to rest by the side of the husband of her youth.
