Viola Emma Moen was born Dec. 15, 1924, on her parents’ farm in rural Frankville; she was the daughter of William and Martha (Grotegut) Snitker. She was baptized at home due to her mother’s illness; Viola was later confirmed at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Since her mother died in Feb. 1925, and Viola was a tiny baby, she was raised the first year by her father’s sister Mrs. Fred Krumme. Viola attended rural schools. When she was 13, her father died suddenly from a heart attack. Viola went to live with her oldest sister Lillian Jeide and attended Waukon High School, graduating in 1943. She worked at the button factory in Lansing, and at Waukon Newspapers for a short time. She married Rudolph “Rudy” Benhart Moen July 11, 1945, at Zion United Church of Christ; four children were born to this union. After she raised her family, Viola did some housecleaning around town and also worked at Northgate Care Center for almost 20 years.

She had a strong faith and was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and its ladies circle. Viola enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, mowing the grass and canning. She loved spending time with family and friends and attended many family picnics. An excellent crocheter, she made many afghans for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Viola also liked to play euchre, sing with Rudy and dance. She loved going out, whether it was to visit someone, eat or just get coffee.

Viola is survived by her four children: Dale Moen of Decatur, Mich., Dianne Long of Decorah, Marsha (Will) Bieber of Waukon and Janice (Paul) Peterson of Pardeeville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren: Sheila, Sherry, Shelly and Sally Moen, Chris Long, Brian Bieber, Lisa (Erik) Hagen, Jeff (Elisabeth) Bieber, Jason (Susanne) Peterson and Kristen Peterson; great-grandchildren: Michael, Katherine, Hannah and Mark Hagen and Elliot and Elise Bieber; her sister Evangeline Becker of West Allis, Wis.; and two half-sisters, LaVonne Tietz of Decorah and Gladys Bloom of Milton, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Rudy in 1995; four sisters: Ruth (Henry) Meier, Hilda (Albert) Govin, Lillian (Lawrence) Jeide and Stella (Ralph) Flage; a half-brother Alvin Snitker; and brothers-in-law: Robert Becker and Leonard Tietz.
