From 1916 newspaper provided by Linus Cremer:

A GOOD MAN IS CALLED HOME

Theodore Giesing, a Prominent Citizen of the County and Pioneer Resident, Died September 8, 1916.

Theodore Giesing died at his home east of Festina, Iowa, Friday, September 8, 1916, death being due to cancer of the liver.

His parents came to this country from West Phalen, Germany, in 1846 and settled near Burlington, Wis. where the subject of this sketch was born on the 28th day of March 1856. In the fall of 1856 they came to Winneshiek county and moved on a farm – now owned by August Hagemann—near Calmar. Mr. Giesing’s mother died October 9, 1878, at the age of sixty-five, and his father departed this life September 20, 1888, aged eighty-five.

The deceased was the youngest of ten children—five boys and five girls—two of whom survive: Henry on a farm near Festina and Anna—Mrs. Warren E. Jarvis—in Crested Butte, Colorado. He lived on his father’s farm until 1896 when he purchased the Philip Lauer farm 2-1/2 miles east of Festina, where he resided until called by death.

May 29, 1883, at Festina, Theodore Giesing married Elizabeth Moellers. This union was blessed with nine children, who with the wife and mother survive. The children are: Joseph, near Calmar; Bernard, at home; Mary—Mrs. H. Bodensteiner—Ossian; Lena—Mrs. T. Schrandt—near Festina; Leo, Celia, Anna, Agnes and Paulina, at home.

Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Catholic church at Festina Monday morning, Sept. 11, 1916, Rev. A. J. Rubly officiating, and interment was made in the parish cemetery, the remains being conveyed to their final resting place by John Hagemann, William Doerr, A. G. Rosenbaum, W. Wenthold, B. J. Kleve and Theo. Uhlenhake.

Could all live the just and upright life Theodore Giesing lived, and die in his trusting faith, death could no longer be called “The King of Terrors,” for he inspired no terror there. The dying man and sorrowing family looked forward with the same eye of faith to the brighter future where his temporary separation would end in an eternal reunion.

May he rest in peace!
