“Early Pioneer Dead”

Caroline (Bechel) Cremer was the daughter of Sebastian Bachel, and Mary Dollinger. She was born in Oldenburg, Indiana, Sept. 29, 1839.

She came to Festina in 1848 with her parents, being 9 years of age. George Bechel, the first sheriff of Winneshiek County was her older brother. Her other sister was Regina Bechel (Mrs. Andrew Meyer) who died February 6, 1915, at Ossian in her 90th year.

She was married to Henry Cremer at Festina, Iowa, February 7th, 1860. The following children were born to this union: Henry of Teedee, Mont.; Sr. M. Sanctia (St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, Wis.); Elizabeth, Mrs. Alois Lensing of Festina, Iowa; Frances (who died a member of the Franciscan Order of LaCrosse); Pauline (Mrs. Josephine Gerleman) of Calmar, Iowa, Joseph A. of San Francisco, Calif.; William E. of Nome, Alaska; John George (who died in infancy); George M. of Seattle, Washington; John of Teedee, Montana, Louis of Canada; Charles of Plevna, Montana.

They lived on a farm in Washington township. Her husband died on September 22, 1901.

She was a life long and faithful member of the Catholic church and died fortified by the frequent reception of the sacraments.

She went to her eternal reward and died at her daughters home (Mrs. Elizabeth Lensing) at Festina, March 20, 1922. her funeral took place at Festina, Iowa, March 22, 1922, at 10:00 a.m.

Her nephew, Rev. William J. Cremer of Dorchester, Iowa, celebrated the Requiem High Mass. Rev. A.J. Rubly of Festina conducted the services at the cemetery. The pall bearers were: Fred Etteldorf, Joe Thuente, William Balk, John Rothmeyer, Joseph Fierfeil, and Theo Einck. Cross bearer William Schrandt.

This good mother had the distinction of being the last of the pioneers who came to Winneshiek County, in the forties of the last century.

Friends and relatives came from far and near to show the esteem in which she was held.
