Lylas Kathryn Rasmussen, age 84, of rural Mabel, Minn., died Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at Harmony Healthcare in Harmony.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12 at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Reverend Hans Floan officiating.

Burial will be in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m., Sunday, July 11, 2004 at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel and one hour prior to services at the church.

Lylas Rasmussen was born in Winneshiek County on May 20, 1920 to Will and Stena (Vick) Gjetley.

She was baptized and confirmed at the Decorah Lutheran Church.

She graduated from the Decorah High School in 1938. After graduation she enrolled in the Madison Business College in Madison, Wis.

From 1939 to 1950, she lived in several parts of the country, working as a secretary/office manager at Remington Rand, Inc. in Madison, Wis.; Signal Hill Oil Company in Long Beach, Calif., and holding various office posi-tions in Denver, Colorado, New Orleans, Louisiana, and Minnea-polis, Minn. She enjoyed travel-ing with her sister Edith Gjetley during these years.

October 22, 1950, she married Vernon Rasmussen at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newton, Iowa.

They lived on their farm near Hesper, raising seven children.

Vernon Rasmussen passed away on February 20, 2001.

Lylas Rasmussen was a member of the Hesper Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school, was active in church choir, WELCA, and church circle.

She loved to travel and in 1983 she and her husband traveled with their children to Norway where they accompanied the Luren Singing Society on a tour of the country.

She especially enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Lylas Rasmussen was an avid gardener. She particularly loved her roses, her English walnut trees, and her fruit trees. She enjoyed bird watching and especially liked bluebirds.

Survivors include her three daughters: Sheila (Tom) Norby of Canton, Minn.; Sharon (Gary) Hanson of Spring Grove, Minn., and Carol (Gordon) Gaustad of Decorah; three sons Alan (Kris) of Decorah; Dean and Craig (Joan) both of Mabel; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Edith (Leland) Naley of Decorah; and one brother Curtis Gjetley.

Lylas Rasmussen was preceded in death by her husband Vernon; a daughter Joan Fay Whalen; her parents Will and Stena Gjetley and a sister, Ruth Dohm.
