Decorah, Ia., - SPECIAL: Funeral services for Alvin A. Hawks, 80, of Hesper were held at the Hesper Friends Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Rev. Alvin Hoskins, pastor, officiated and burial was in the adjoining cemetery.Mr. Hawks was killed while felling trees Monday morning. A falling limb he had cut crushed him and he died instantly. His son who had gone to the house for a wedge, discovered him on his return a few minutes later.
Mr. Hawks was born Dec. 17, 1857, in St. Albans, Me., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph S. Hawks. He was of English descent, his ancestors on both sides being among the early American settlers. In the spring of 1865 he came with his family to Winneshiek County. The family settled in Hesper Township and in 1883 they moved to a farm which has since been his home.
Mr. Hawks spent more than 70 years of his life in Hesper Township. He was educated there and for 40 years served as treasurer of the Hesper School District. He was also secretary of the Hesper Telephone Company. He was a well-known breeder of registered Red Polled cattle.
He married Miss Mary F. Lyon on Jan. 12, 1899. Three children to this union survive; Loren Raymond, Mrs. Avis Ellen Street, and Carol, all of near Hesper. His wife died June 30, 1936.
