Decorah- Howard O. Bakken, 51, died Wednesday evening in Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Anne; two sons, Carlton and Eric, both of Decorah; a daughter, Anne Bakken of Decorah; his parents, Ole and Pauline Bakken of Decorah; a brother, Gerald W. of Decorah; and a sister, Phyllis Leistikow of St. Charles, Minn.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Madison Lutheran Church. Burial: church cemetery. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Friday at Fjelstul's and at the church Saturday one hour before services.

Howard O. Bakken was born on February 26, 1936, the son of Ole H. and Pauline (Baker) Bakken. He was baptized and confirmed in the Madison Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of the Decorah High School and attended Luther College for two years. On October 14, 1967, Howard married Mary Anne Helgerson at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, Iowa. They became the parents of three children. He passed away at the Winneshiek County Hospital, Decorah, Iowa on Wednesday evening, January 6, 1988.

Howard farmed all of his life on a third generation farm. He was active in the Madison Lutheran Church, Ridgeway, Iowa serving as a Sunday School Teacher, Church Council member, Luther League Advisor, and a member of the Madison Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Past Treasurer of the Winneshiek County Historical Society, member of the Winneshiek Co-op Board of Directors, Board of the Aase Haugen Home Board of Directors, and a Board member with the Winneshiek County Extension.

Howard O. Bakken is survived by his wife Mary Anne, three children Carleton, Eric, and Anne all at home; his parents Ole and Pauline Bakken; one brother Gerald W. Bakken of Decorah, Iowa; one sister Phyllis and her husband Ralph Leistikow of St. Charles, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his brother Roger Bakken.

Note of the transcriber: His obituary did not name the burial location but since he was a member of the Madison Cemetery Board, perhaps that is the cemetery where he was interred.
