Esther Beatrice Reckward, 89, of Castalia, Iowa died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa. She was born December 6, 1925 to Olavis and Sandora (Shervin) Holm in Elkader, Iowa. Esther graduated from high school in Decorah, Iowa in 1943. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught country school at Bodensteiner and Stendel Country Schools.

Esther was united in marriage with Virgil Reckward on August 28, 1943 in Elkader, Iowa. Five children were born to this union. She was a member, treasurer and secretary of the Castalia United Methodist Church. Esther was also a homemaker, farm wife, chef, and an amazing seamstress. Esther loved to bake and cook. She enjoyed having company, playing cards and dice, singing, dancing and she love her hummingbirds.

Esther is survived by her children, Pat (Jerry) Monroe of Castalia, Jerry (Julie) Reckward of Castalia, Sue (Dale) Lenth of Castalia and Gin (Roger) Sanford of Decorah; a daughter-in-law, Judy Reckward of Decorah; twelve grandchildren, Chad Reckward, Brad (Jennifer) Reckward, Dennis (Mandy) Reckward, Darin Reckward, Julie (Matt) Metille, Summer (Chris) Wiedow; Richard (Lisa) Reckward, Jeannie (Steve) Daughton, April (Ty) Hamilton, Joe (Augusta) Lenth, Nichole (Nate) Jevne and Danielle Aldredge; twenty-one great-grandchildren, Hayden, Macy, Ani, Olivia, Britann, Blake, Makinzie, Parker, Luke, Dalton, Kolton, Jessica, Samee, Jordan, Kourtney, Hope (Jason), Dakota, Stella, Lila, Brooke and Gabriella; four great-great grandchildren, Colton, Hunter, Landin and Derek and two sisters, Helen Christianson of St. Peter, Minnesota and Frances (Tom) Lindsay of Lansing, Iowa.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil in 2014; her son, Jim Reckward; a granddaughter, Amy Monroe; her parents; two brothers, Merlyn and Ralph Holm and two sisters, Violet McMullen and Olettia Melka.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 28, 2015 from 4-7 pm at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, Iowa and also one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Memorial Services will be at 11 am on Thursday, October 29, 2015 at the Ossian Lutheran Church, Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Dave Lenth as the Officiant.

Inurnment will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery, Castalia, Iowa.

Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Ossian, Iowa is helping the family with the arrangements.
