Death Summons to J. J. Mason.

Like the dread sound of a fire bell in the night, came the announcement on Wednesday morning that J. J. Mason, who had been seen on our streets the previous day in the health and strength of a well preserved life, was on the brink of death. Taken with neuralgia of the heart on Tuesday afternoon at about three o’clock, he passed away at about three o’clock Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased was born in Vermont, April 24, 1812, and hence had passed his 83rd birthday. His parents were Elias and Betsey Coburn Mason, and with them he removed to the state of New York when about twelve years of age, remaining there until he came west in 1837. December 30, 1835, at Hamilton, Madison county, N. Y., he was united in marriage with Diana C. Orton, who survives him. In 1837 he came to Chicago, and shortly after to Milwaukee, locating in this county in 1855 at the village of Howard, where he became interested in the public house of the place, then almost as widely known as any place west of the Mississippi. From there he went to Decorah, purchased the Decorah House and was its genial host for a few years. He successively was engaged in the hotel business at Waverly, Waukon and Lime Springs; his last work in that line was in this place, where for several years he was proprietor of the hotel purchased from J. F. Webster in 1880, then known as the Webster House, later as the Park Hotel. He was in the Winnesheik{sp} House prior to the purchase of the Webster House, with A. J. McClaskey, who is a son-in-law.

Mr. Mason was a plain, unassuming, honest man, a good neighbor, a law-observing and law abiding citizen, with an open hand and purse to the demands of charity.

He leaves his widow and three daughters, Mrs. Louise McClasky, Mrs. Helen Cleghorn and Miss Diana C. Mason.

The funeral will be at the house, Friday morning at 10 a. m.; the interment will be at Decorah, where he will be buried by the side of his eldest daughter there buried several years since.
