Nels O. Folkedahl, age 78, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday morning, May 23, 2015 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah Rev. Bryan Robertson officiating.

Inurnment will be in Union Prairie Cemetery in rural Decorah, with full military honors.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 20, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Nels Oscar Folkedahl was born on November 15, 1936 in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Norton M. and Henrietta Dorothea Irene (Severide) Folkedahl. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1954.

Nels was united in marriage to Nancy Snipe in 1958 in Charleston, South Carolina and later divorced. This union was blessed with two children; Russell (Rusty) and Lynn Marie.

Nels entered the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and eventually earned the rank of Master Sergeant. He retired from the Air Force with an honorable discharge in 1975.

He was a member of Decorah Lutheran Church and also a member of the I.O.O.F. Nels enjoyed walking, telling jokes, playing cards, watching football, basketball and baseball on TV and the Iowa State Cyclones. He was an avid bowler and won many trophies. He enjoyed family reunions and the Winneshiek County Fair, and he also loved the Guy Lombardo Radio Show.

He was preceded in death by his father Norton on January 29, 1980; his mother Irene on May 21, 1988; his son Russell on July 18, 1987; two brothers: Dale on December 9, 1965 and Dennis on December 23, 2007; one nephew, Terry on April 9, 2001; and a great niece Rikki McCabe. His sister Arla died on June 11, 2015.

Nels is survived by his daughter, Lynn Marie; four sisters: Sharon Folkedahl of Glendale, Arizona, Lois Lembcke of Saukville, Wisconsin, Colleen (Lloyd) Gossman of Decorah and Diane Lynne Folkedahl of Decorah; one brother, Vincent (Bev) Folkedahl of Iowa City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
