Rites Held For Miss M. Whalen

Funeral services for Miss Monnie K. Whalen, 75, were held Monday, June 5, at 9 a.m. at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Decorah. Miss Whalen died Friday, June 2, at the Decorah hospital following an illness of about a month.

Rev. Daniel O’Sullivan officiated and burial was in the Catholic cemetery. The Olson-Iverson funeral home was in charge of arrangements and pallbearers were: Alvin Renaas, Frederic Reum, Leo Ronan, William Ronan, William P. Johnson, and Walter Rooney. On the flower committee were Miss Mildred McIntosh, Mrs. W. H. Johnson, Miss Susan Shea and Miss Rosemary Rooney.

Miss Whalen was born April 9, 1875, in Decorah, the daughter of Peter and Ellen Whalen. She received her education in the Decorah public school, Immaculate Conception academy, University of Wisconsin, University of Minnesota, and the Iowa State Teachers College.

The deceased was a member of the Decorah grade school faculty in Decorah for about 40 years.
She was a member of the library board, B. P. W., Broadway Hospital unit, Rosary society, Oneota golf club, and St. Benedict’s church. She was very active in Girl Scout work.

There are no survivors. Her only sister preceded her in death.

NOTES:
Monnie (Mary K.) died in 1950. Her mother was Ellen Bunce Whalen. The sister who predeceased her was Anna C. “Tina” Whalen, who died 13 August 1949. Peter Whalen (1841-1920) was a brother of Thomas Whalen (1837-1888)and Patrick Whalen (1850-1923) of French Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa).
