Miss Whalen, 72, Dies At Hospital

Miss Anna C. Whalen, 72, lifetime resident of Decorah, died at the Decorah hospital at 2:25 a.m., Saturday, August 13. Miss Whalen suffered a heart attack at the wheel of her car after a minor accident on Broadway in Decorah, Friday evening.

She was taken to the hospital immediately after the accident and died five hours later. Funeral services were held Tuesday (today) at 9 a.m. at the St. Benedict’s church in Decorah. The burial was in St. Benedict’s cemetery. The Rev Daniel O’Sullivan officiated at the ceremony.

The pallbearers were Walter Rooney, William Ronan, James Ronan, William N. Johnson, Leo Ronan, and Alvin Renaas. On the flower committee were Mrs. W. N. Johnson, Miss Katherine Jewell, Mrs. Marjorie McLean and Miss Diane Montgomery.

Miss Anna C. Whalen was born in Decorah on January 19, 1877. Her parents were Peter and Ellen Whalen. She was educated in the Immaculate Conception Academy and at Valder college in Decorah. She never married.

Funeral Today for Miss Whalen

She is survived by one sister Monnie K. Whalen of Decorah. Miss Anna Whalen was for many years connected with the Winneshiek county bank and has lately been in the insurance business.

Miss Whalen was a charter member of the B. P. W. club of Decorah and was its first president. She was also secretary of the Broadway Hospital unit and a member of the Oneota Golf and Country club.
She was also one of the early members of the Women’s Relief Corps in Decorah and was a member of the Rosary society of the Catholic church. She was a member of the Roman Catholic church.

NOTES: Anna was the daughter of Peter Whalen and Ellen Bunce. Peter Whalen (1841-1920) was a brother of Thomas Whalen (1837-1888) and Patrick Whalen (1850-1923) of French Creek Township, Allamakee County, Iowa).
