Lloyd Myron Sivesind
BOY IS DROWNED NEAR THE DECORAH DUGWAYThe first drowning, and we sincerely hope the last, occurred in this community last Saturday about the noon hour, when little Lloyd Myron, the ten year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Sivesind, lost his life in the river at the Dugway dam near the boat house, says the Decorah Public Opinion. Lloyd with a neighbor playmate, Roger Sampson, went to the river to fish Saturday morning. He was on the dam, which is very slippery and accidentally slipped off into the water, which is about 15 feet deep.
The Sampson boy gave the alarm and one of the first to respond was Miss "Peggy" Hanson, who resides nearby on Main street. She hastened to the river and demonstrated her nerve and patriotism by wading out into the deep water in an effort to reach the boy who had gone under. The water was cold and Miss Hanson was seized with cramps and had to leave the water.
The telephone was put into use and doctors and fire department were called and a crowd began to collect. But Miss Hanson, nothing daunted, went back into the river and resumed her rescue work. A rope was procured which she fastened about her waist, then waded out to where the boy's fish pole was standing up on end. She grasped the pole and drew it in, the line having been fastened about the boy's wrist, and the little fellow was pulled out of the water in this manner after being under about 20 minutes. It was a daring, courageous piece of work on the part of Miss Hanson, and we think she should be entitled to a Carnegie medal. She surely became a hero in the eyes of all.
Lloyd was beyond all aid when taken out. Doctors worked over him though, doing everything possible, but to no avail. Lloyd was born in Decorah on June 24, 1918, and was nearing his tenth birthday. He is survived by his bereaved parents, two brothers and two sisters.
