EVERETT JOHN GEORGE SCHULTZ
MILITARY FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY FOR EVERETT SCHULTZMilitary funeral services for Everett John George Schultz were held last Friday from Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia with the Rev. L. R. Meinecke officiating and the V. F. W. Post No. 9125 of Postville.
Everett Schultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schultz of Castalia, was born on October 4, 1915. He graduated from Postville high school in 1934. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in Zion Lutheran Church of Castalia.
In July, 1935 he enlisted in the United States Navy for a period of four years. He was discharged in July 1939 with the rank of 2nd class Boatsman.
He was united in marriage with Orlene Bareis on November 5, 1941. The young couple lived in Postville until the time of his entering the service of his country again in July of 1942. He saw considerable action in the Pacific theater of war and received his honorable discharge on October 4, 1945, with the rank of Chief Boatsman. He had given seven years and three months service to his country.
In November of 1945 he and his family moved to the present home in Castalia. He was employed by the Carnation Milk Factory and labored at this particular firm for a period of six years thus having the rank of senior priority in this particular establishment.
In November 1948 the departed submitted to an emergency ulcer operation from which he rallied and was able to return to work, however, early last winter it appeared that his health was losing strength. In January of this year he went to the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines for observation and treatment. After a period of time he was permitted to return home and even began working again. On last May 8 he again decided to return to Des Moines for further treatment. June 5 he submitted to a cranetomy operation. He departed from this life at 6:00 p.m. June 12, at the age of 34.
The departed was a member of the V. F. W. and the American Legion of Postville. He had served as mayor of Castalia for nearly two terms and while he was in office many improvements for the welfare of the community were undertaken. He served as president of the Lutheran Brotherhood for one term and took active interest in this organization and his church. With his passing the community and the church loses a consecrated Christian worker.
Funeral services were in charge of the V. F. W. Members of the V. F. W. served as pall bearers and conducted the military rites at the cemetery in Postville. William Livingood commander of V. F. W. Post No. 9125 presented the flag to the widow in behalf of the United States government. The Auxiliary was in charge of the flowers.
