John Bernatz, age 70, of Davenport, IA formerly of Spillville, IA died Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota surrounded by family after a very short battle with cancer.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church at 207 Church St. Spillville, IA with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial of cremains will be at the Haug Cemetery west of Spillville at a later date.

John Bernatz was born August 27, 1942 at the hospital in Decorah, IA to John Howard and Sylvia (Novak) Bernatz. John attended St. Wenceslaus School in Spillville, IA and graduated from South Winneshik High School in Calmar, IA in 1960. John then graduated from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, IA with a degree in Music Education in 1964. John taught in Olin School District for four years before being drafted into the Army June 10, 1969. He served a tour of duty in Viet Nam. After his honorable discharge from the Army on June 17, 1971 he taught music and directed the marching band for 34 years for the Davenport Community School District until his retirement in 2002. He received many awards during his teaching career. He then served as the Music Facilitator for the Davenport district until 2008. John enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, gardening, movies, music and the arts, going out for a good meal and talking politics.

John’s survivors include his Sisters: Suzanne Warner, St. Louis Park, MN and Sally (Roger) Mihm, Ft. Atkinson, IA and a brother: Tom (Ruth) Bernatz, New Hampton, IA. Nieces and nephews: Mike (Sara) Warner, Jennifer (Jody) Nieborg, Tom (Lindsay) Warner, all of Minneapolis, MN, Kathy (Shane) Bohlmann of Denver, IA, Jeff (Megan Deitrick) Bernatz of New Hampton, IA, Angie (Karl Kozak) Mihm of Waterloo, IA , Andy Mihm, Fort Atkinson, IA Cousins: David (Sue) Hagen and Mary (Dan) Kelly both of Minneapolis, MN. and other great nieces and nephews and cousins.

John preceded in death by his parents: Howard Bernatz in 1948 and Sylvia Novak Bernatz Shileny in 2005. Step-father: Edward Shileny in 2000. Brother-in- law Michael Warner in 2012.

Following the church service family and friends are invited to share memories during a meal at Chihak Hall in Spillville, IA.
