Roger L. Sampson of Frankville, son of LeRoy and Selma (Rognas) Sampson, was born May 3, 1918 at Decorah, Iowa. He died Jan. 31, 1994 at the Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, following a brief illness. He was 75.

He was baptized on June 2, 1918 and confirmed June 19, 1932, both at Decorah Lutheran Church by Pastor Ole Glesne. He was educated at the Decorah schools, and graduated from Decorah High School in 1936. He served as a sergeant at a U. S. Army Air Force Base unit from 1942-1945.

On Sept. 13, 1942, he married Jean Crawford at the Frankville Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Wilton Sinning officiating. To this union, two daughters were born. He worked Jean's family farm on the edge of Frankville since 1947. After retiring from farming, he worked at Lang's Dairy Equipment in Decorah.

Home and family came first for Roger. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing. He loved animals and birds, and enjoyed all of God's creation. He enjoyed the fellowship of many friends and relatives, and his outlook on life was framed by a wonderful sense of humor and love of giving to others.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 163 for 48 years; of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks (Lodge 443) for 35 years; of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and was a volunteer fireman in Frankville for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; two daughters, Shirley (Mrs. Dean) Foels of Postville, and Sharon (Mrs. Larry) Strait of Dousman, Wis.; two brothers, Gordon Sampson and his wife Vivian of Leesburg, Fla., and Lyle Sampson and his wife Marilyn of LaCrescent, Minn.; four grandchildren, Christa (Mrs. Richard) Parker of Cedar Rapids, Karsten Foels of Postville, Daryl and Jenni Strait of Madison, Wis. and Christian Strait of Madison.

A funeral service was held on Feb. 2 at the Frankville Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Keith Kensinger and Drue E. Robertson officiating. Burial with full military rites by Bernatz-Symonds American Legion Postville No. 163 and Helof-Holm VFW Post 1977 was at Frankville Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wayne Brandt, Earl Koenig, Byron Schultz, David Schwinefus, Lester Van Wey and Leland Walby. Honorary pallbearers: Decorah Class of 1936. Fjelstul Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
