JOHN D. GREENE.

One of the veterans and one of the pioneers of Decorah, was laid away in his final resting place last Sunday.

John D. Greene was born in Barre, Mass., on the 30th day of April, 1805, and died in Decorah, on Friday morning February 10th, 1888, at the ripe old age of eighty-two years, nine months and eleven days.

About the time he attained his majority (in 1826) he pushed his way westward, “seeking his fortune,” Ohio was then the far west, and he located in that state, and there, thirty-four years—the most active of his life—were spent. There he was married in 1829, and reared his family. Six children were born to them; but only two survive him. These are Mrs. C. E. Dickerman of this city and Walter Greene, of Sioux Falls, Dak.

In 1860, Mr. Greene and his wife followed their children to Decorah, and in 1866 his wife died. Thereafter his home was with his daughter. For many years he followed in a quiet way, a mercantile life, as much for occupation as for profit; but gave this up several years go.

Mr. Greene was converted in 1832, and united with the Church of the Disciples. It is enough to say of him that in every relation he bore to his acquaintances in Decorah, his life exemplified a pure, true and honest endeavor to be a simple, earnest, faithful Christian. In temper and disposition he was like a long summer day, so gentle, genial and lovable was his nature. We all knew him as Uncle John, and esteemed as a Christian without guile. While not a strong man, his later years were reasonably free from sickness and suffering, and it may be said he enjoyed his hale old age. During the past winter he was more feeble than usual, but his death came suddenly and unexpectedly. The last services his kindred and friends could render were paid on Sunday last, Rev. Jno. Willard officiating. It was a funeral, not a funeral occasion. Like a shock of corn fully ripe, he fell asleep ready to awake into blessed immortality.
