Decorah Republican August 9, 1906

ANOTHER AGED SETTLER GONE.

Death of Mrs. John M. Green, Aged 81 Years—Fifty Years a Resident of Decorah.

After an illness of several months, following a general breaking down from old age, Mrs. Margaret H. Green died at her home in this city last Friday evening, the 3d, at about eleven o’clock.

Mrs. Green was born in Zanesville, Ohio, Sept. 30, 1825, where she was married to John M. Green in 1856, coming directly to Decorah. Her maiden name was Margaret Hazlett and she was the youngest and last surviving member of a famiiy of ten children. Among the members of her family who were known in Decorah was Hugh Hazlett, who came here in an early day and whose remains are buried in the Phelps cemetery. Mrs. Cox of Chicago, a sister, was a frequent visitor here also during her life. No children came to the home of Dr. and Mrs. Green, and the surviving relatives are nieces and nephews. But a short time ago two nieces—Mrs. Norton of Chicago and Mrs. A. A. Clark of Des Moines were guests of their aunt. Mrs. Norton remained for a longer visit and while she was still here Mrs. Green was compelled to take to her bed. Soon after she lapsed into a coma from which she aroused at intervals but which finally ended in her death.

Mrs. Green was a woman of culture and refinement, and during her long residence in Decorah drew around her a circle of warm friends. Particularly in her later years did she enjoy the associations of life, and though in her eighty-first year her faculties remained unimpaired to a remarkable degree. For more than forty years she lived in the home on Broadway which she and her husband established during their early years of their married life.

The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, Rev. Mahlon Willett officiating. Among the relatives who were in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Clark of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Cummings of Cedar Falls and Mrs. Norton and son Milton G. Norton of Chicago.
