Catherine Smorsted

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the Schutte Funeral Chapel in Postville and later at the United Brethren church at Castalia for Mrs. Catherine Smorsted of Castalia who passed away at the Postville hospital Friday, February 12, following an illness of some duration.

As Catherine Mundt, she was born at Stutgart, Germany, November 2, 1862. At the age of 7 years she came to America with her mother and settled at Giard. In March, 1888, she was united in marriage to Fred Schellhamer. Their first home was made on a farm near Postville. Later they purchased a farm near Castalia, where Mr. Schellhamer met an accidental death in 1906. Seven children were born to this union, Fred of Janesville, Wis.; Anna, Mrs. E. J. Baltz of Castalia; Clara, Mrs. Reuben Bernhard of Giard; Helen, Mrs. Roy Owen of Cedar Rapids, and Mae, Mrs. Joe Schultz of Yuma, Ariz. Herbert and Elsie preceded their mother in death, the latter in 1931.

Mrs. Schellhamer was united in marriage to Ole Smorsted of near Frankville in 1914. Mr. Smorsted passed away in 1917. Mrs. Smorsted retired from farming in 1918 and moved to Castalia where she has since resided.

She is survived by her five children, two step-sons, Joe and Fred Smorsted, of Frankville; two brothers, Louis Mundt of Rockwell; Henry Mundt of near Castalia, and 13 grandchildren. Two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Burial was made in Pleasant View cemetery. Rev. Melvin Hall had charge of the service. The sympathy of their many friends is extended to the sorrowing relatives.
