Funeral services were held November 17 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia for Mrs. Mary Bareis, who passed away November 14, 1956. The Rev. Edgar Zelle was in charge of the rites. Burial was in the Castalia cemetery.

Mary Stopperan Bareis was born in Clayton county, Iowa, on December 13, 1879, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Stopperan. She was united in marriage with Fred Bareis on April 10, 1900. Four children were born to this union: Albert, John who died in infancy, Leonard, and Ethel. Mrs. Bareis spent 50 years of her life on the farm near Castalia and the last few months in town. She had been in poor health for some years, but her death came rather suddenly on November 14, 1956. She would have been 77 years old next month.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: John, Carl and Will; one sister, Mrs. Sophia Meyer; her son who died in infancy; and her husband who died in 1946. She is survived by two sons: Albert of Washington, Illinois and Leonard of Castalia; one daughter, Mrs. L. A. Lampman of Castalia; two grandsons; one great grandson; two sisters: Mrs. Anna Leubka, Postville, and Mrs. Henry Bareis, Cresco; as well as other relatives.
