Decorah- John Reginald "Reg" Pearson, 94, died Saturday in his home. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial: Phelps Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Fjelstul Funeral Home and after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan (Mrs. L. T. "Bud") Amundson of Mabel, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and two grandchildren.
John, the only son of Gilbert T. "Skip" and Emma Mae Haas Pearson, was born June 18, 1898, in Carson City, Colo. At an early age he moved with his parents to Ladysmith, Wis., and then, before grade school, to Decorah. His father was a farmer and livestock dealer in Winneshiek County. Reg attended the Decorah public schools and, upon graduation, entered Iowa State College, Ames, where he earned a degree in animal husbandry. He came back to Decorah and entered into the family business, where he eventually began the first livestock sales commission firm in northeast Iowa. On June 15, 1925, he was united in marriage to Marvel Smith of Omaha, Neb. They were married 63 years until her death in October of 1988.
Since retiring from active participation in livestock sales, he directed his time and energies to various community groups, serving on many committees; various farm-related organizations; Congregational Church; Masonic bodies such as Eastern Star, Scottish Rite and El Kahir Temple (Cedar Rapids Shrine Club), Winneshiek County Fair, having served as secretary for many years, Decorah school board, Phelps Cemetery Board, Old Winneshiek County Hospital Board; past director of Security Bank; and member of Decorah Elks Lodge. He was a World War I veteran.
