HERVEY C. SCHMIDT

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, Castalia, for Hervey C. Schmidt, who passed away following an accident at Bloomfield, Iowa on April 30. The Rev. Arthur Tolo was in charge of the rites; burial was at Pleasant View Cemetery with graveside military rites conducted by the American Legion and V. F. W. Posts.

Hervey Cliffton Schmidt, son of William and Mabel Schmidt, nee Schultz, was born in the Castalia community, on October 23, 1921. On December 13 of the same year he was baptized at Zion Lutheran church and confirmed in the same church in 1934, where he had also attended Sunday School.

He received public school education in the Castalia schools, and served in the U. S. Navy in World War II, after which he lived for a time at Castalia, then for some years in Oregon and Michigan, as well as in the Postville and Castalia areas.

Most recently he had been in the employ of the D. C. Taylor Co., a Cedar Rapids contractor. Last Tuesday he met his death in the course of his work at Bloomfield, Iowa, at the age of 46 years.

At the time of his passing he is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mabel Schmidt of Castalia; by his sister, Mrs. Cleora (Philip) Wander, and by the following family: two stepsons, Jerry Barnholtz of Decorah and Roger Barnholtz of Waterloo; two sons, Hervey C. Schmidt, Jr. of the U. S. Navy; Steven Schmidt of Decorah; one daughter, Mrs. Sandra Distler of Waterloo, several grandchildren and a number of uncles and aunts, most of them from this community.

CASTALIA MAN KILLED IN FALL
Castalia, Ia. -- Hervey C. Schmidt, 47, of Castalia, was killed Tuesday afternoon in a fall from a water tower in Bloomfield, Ia., when the scaffolding he was standing on broke.

Services are pending at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Ia.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mabel Schmidt of Castalia; a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Distler of Waterloo, Ia.; two sons, Hervey Jr., in the service, and Steven, at home; two step-sons, Jerry Barnholtz of Decorah, Ia., and Roger Barnholz of Waterloo; and a sister, Mrs. Philip Wander of Castalia.
