Spencer Coats, another of our old settlers, has died since our last writing. He was born in Oswego Co., New York, Oct. 14th, 1814, where he resided until 1843, when he moved to Walworth Co., Wis. In the year of 1853 he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Nicolson, who was his companion for 45 years. In 1864 he moved with his family to Iowa and settled in Allamakee Co. where he was employed in farming and stone-quarrying and where he resided until last fall. He then, with his wife, moved to Battle Creek. Mich., where he resided at the time of his death, which occured Friday, April 22d, 1898, aged 85 years, 6 months and 10 days. Five children were horn to these par¬ents, all of whom, with the aged wife, survive the deceased. The son Nile, and the daughters, Mrs. Geo. Webster, of Cleveland, Mrs. Jane Simmons, of Frankville and Amelia and Delia, of Battle Creek, Mich., were all in attend¬ance at the funeral, also Mrs. Coats. The services were held at the M E. church in our village Monday, Rev. Fish officiating, the burial being made at the village cemetery. Mr. Coats was a man respected by his friends and neighbors and his death makes a sad¬ness in the community.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows his name spelled Coates. His gravestone shows he died April 29 which doesn’t agree with the above and also his age doesn’t agree with this. He is buried in the Frankville Cemetery.
