Marie Broghamer, age 82, of Decorah, IA, died Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Wellington Place Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2014, at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, 307 West Main St. Decorah, IA, with Rev. Philip Gibbs presiding, burial will be in the St. Benedict Catholic Cemetery at a later date.

Friends may call from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, December 22, 2014, at the Schluter Balik Funeral Home, 604 South Avenue in Decorah. There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m., on Monday afternoon. There will also be visitation after 9:30 a.m., at the church on Tuesday morning.

Marie Genevieve Broghamer was born on July 5, 1932, the daughter of Harry and Stella (Carolan) Courtney, at their home near Bluffton. Marie graduated from Decorah High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Marcellus Broghamer on February 25, 1952, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in Bluffton, Iowa, and to this union five children were born: Kathy, Marsha, David, Lisa, and Tearza. Together they purchased their farm in 1959. Marie farmed with Marcellus until 1984 when she went to work for Luther College in food service where she worked with students in the work study program and was a friend and mother to many. She worked there until retiring in 2002. Marie enjoyed playing cards, having coffee with her friends, and lovingly caring for her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Benedict’s ladies circle, the Holstein Auxillary, the Decorah Hospital Auxiliary, and cooked at the Pine Bluff 4-H camp. She enjoyed judging the Dairy Princess Contests at the Iowa State Fair.

Marie is survived by her four children: Kathy (Mike) Nash, Ft. Dodge, IA; Marsha (Pete) Carlson, Minneapolis, MN; Dave (Brenda) Broghamer, Decorah, IA and Lisa Drow, Decorah, IA. Twelve grandchildren: Courtney, Conley (Jenna) and Kelly Nash; Jacob (fiancé Sarah Tommasini), Luke (Taylor) Carlson, and Max Carlson; Brigit (Brent) Storhoff, Jared (Sara) Broghamer, Kristy (Kyle) Tarwater; Jeremy, Joy and Jonathan Drow. Six great grandchildren: Brynn and Claire Storhoff, Kaden and Bryer Tarwater, Liam Nash, and Miles Broghamer. Marie’s siblings: Vincent (Delores) Courtney, Omaha, NE, Louise Nichols, Omaha, NE, Louis (Pat) Courtney, Ridgeway, IA, Elaine Drummond, Houston, TX. Brother-in-law: Mahlon Carlsten, Moline, IL. Two sisters-in-law: Evie Andresen, Cresco, IA, Elaine Halse, Decorah, IA, along with many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband: Marcellus Broghamer, May 25, 2009. Daughter: Tearza Broghamer on May 11, 1984. Her Parents: Harry and Stella (Carolan) Courtney. Her Mother-in-law Agnes Ruffridge. Son-in-law: Gregg Drow on September 16, 2003. Three brothers: Frank Courtney, Gerald Courtney, and Stephen Courtney. Two Sisters: Theresa Courtney and Marge Carlsten. Two sisters-in-law: Audrey Courtney and Gerry Broghamer. Four Brothers-in-law:Tom Andresen, Nate Drummond, Norman Nichols, and Morand Broghamer. Two nephews: Joseph “Joe” Courtney and Dan Courtney. Niece: Theresa Drummond.
