Roy Snyder, age 88, of Decorah, IA, died on Thursday, December 11, 2014, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Calmar Lutheran Church, 200 North East Street, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Bryan Robertson presiding. Burial will be in the Calmar City Cemetery, Calmar, IA.

Friends may call after 10:00 a.m., on Saturday morning at the Calmar Lutheran Church, 200 North East Street, Calmar, IA, with the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home in Decorah is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in memory of Roy Snyder to Wellington Place, 2479 River Road, Decorah, IA, 52101; Winneshiek County Hospice, 907 Montgomery Street, Decorah, IA, 52101, or to all Veteran's DC Memorial Tour, % Kathy Hawkins, 405 Upper Broadway, Decorah, IA 52101.

Roy Allen Snyder was born on June 30, 1926, the son of Lee R. and Margaret Olive (Millison) Snyder in Charleston, PA. Roy attended school in Rochester, PA, until the 10th grade. He served in the US Navy from Feb. 4, 1944 to May 28, 1946. He served in the South Pacific in the 3rd & 5th Fleet, fueling ships at sea. Roy witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty on the USS Missouri. Roy worked in Calmar in the theater business with his uncle after the war. Roy married Virginia Wangsness on June 17, 1948, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Calmar, IA. In 1949, Roy went to work at the George Buchheit Grocery Store and also Marigold Dairy before moving to Belmond, IA, in 1962 to work for Wayne Feeds and Tomco Seed Company. In August 1969, they moved to Illinois and Roy worked at the Trojan Seed Corn Company as a Regional Sales Manager for twenty-two years. Roy then worked for Midwest Supply Co., as a Sales Manager in Morris, IL. He retired in 1990. Roy married Georgia Harvey on May 9, 1998, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in New Hampton. Roy has enjoyed golfing over the years with his friends. Roy was a member the Decorah Lutheran Church and church choir and the Halverson – Giesen American Legion Post #266.

Roy is survived by his wife: Georgia Snyder, Decorah, IA. His three children: Ronald Snyder, Ankeny, IA; David (Susan) Snyder, Tuscola, IL; and Pamela (Arnold) Dean, Oakland, IL. Four grandchildren: Matthew (Kirsten) Snyder, Tamara Snyder, Colin Slaughter and Matt (Lindsey) Dean. Three great grandchildren: Bethany Snyder, Reece Clennon and Charlie Dean. Georgia’s mother: Genevieve Harvey, Hesper, IA. Georgia’s children: Denise (Roger) Uhlenhake, Ossian, IA; Dalane (Bob) Carolan, Hesper, IA; Danna (Jim) Kriener, Fort Atkinson, IA; and Dolan (Kristi) Burreson, Fairbank, IA. Georgia’s grandchildren: Brad (Becky) Uhlenhake, Sarah (fiance, Leigh Swanson) Uhlenhake, David Carolan, Laura Carolan, Raelyn (Nick) Langreck, Reece Kriener, Haley Kriener, Dera Burreson, Cody (Vanessa) Garvin and Kelsey (Andy) Wulfekuhl. Georgia’s three great grandchildren: Bailey, Jackson and Zane. Brothers & Sisters-in-law: Howard (Verna) Wangsness, Decorah, IA; Ken (Ila) Wangsness, Allison, IA; Sharon Wangsness, Allison, IA; Joanne (Gil) Egge, Decorah, IA; and Norma Wangsness, Decorah, IA.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents: Lee R. and Margaret Olive (Millison) Snyder. His first wife: Virginia (Wangsness) Snyder on March 15, 1995. His sister: Dorothy Jampol. Two brothers-in-law: Willis Wangsness and John Wangsness.
