Nora M. Upton, age 65, of Decorah, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah with Pastor Doug Bryce officiating.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Monday, one hour before the service, at Fjelstul Funeral Home.

Nora Marie (Scharff) Upton was born on October 10, 1949 in West Union, Iowa, the daughter of Carl Leo and Eleanor Josephine (Payne) Scharff. She attended elementary school in the East Buchanan Schools and graduated from Independence High School with the class of 1967. Nora worked as a taxicab dispatcher during high school. She attended Area One Technical College in Calmar and graduated from their secretarial program.

Nora was united in marriage to William Charles Upton on August 24, 1968 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Independence. They were blessed with two children, William Charles Jr. and Jennifer Joy.

After their marriage, Nora worked at Fayette County Home in West Union as a certified nurse’s aide. She then worked at the 66 Café in Postville, delivered the Dubuque Telegraph-Herald newspaper to many communities in Northeast Iowa for a number of years, at the Pit-Stop Convenience Store in Postville, and then in the bakery at K&S Supervalu in Decorah. She was a member of the Christian Life Center in Decorah, liked crossword puzzles, figurines and music boxes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter Jennifer on October 25, 2011; foster parents, Edward and Catherine Quass; two brothers, Paul and Wade Scharff; a brother and sister at birth, Steven and Sherry Scharff; and a foster sister, Joyce Quass.

Nora is survived by her son William “Chuck” Upton Jr. of Decorah; her granddaughter, Brittany Ann Gibson of Ossian, IA; two brothers, Carl E. (special friend Pam) Scharff of Independence, IA and Mark Scharff of St. Louis, MO; two foster brothers, Ronald (Marsha) Quass and Robert Quass, of Independence, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
