Mabel Kubesh, age 92, of Calmar, IA, died on Friday, November 14, 2014, at the Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 18, 2014, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 304 South Maryville, Calmar, IA, with Rev. Donald Hawes presiding. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery, Calmar, IA.

Friends may call from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Monday, at the Schluter – Balik Funeral Home, French Chapel, 202 South Washington Street, Calmar, IA, and also after 10:00 a.m., at the church on Tuesday morning.

There will be a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a scripture service at 6:30 p.m., on Monday at the funeral home.

Mabel Pauline Kubesh was born on June 26, 1922, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Landa) Pechota, on the family farm near Protivin, IA. Mabel attended country school through 8th grade. She married Elvin Kubesh on October 27, 1941, at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin, IA. Mabel farmed with her husband and raised their four daughters, Barbara, Elizabeth, Nancy and Debra. In the mid 1960’s, Mabel went to work for Aase Haugen Nursing Home in Decorah. She was superintendent of laundry and housekeeping for 29 years, and absolutely loved her job. Mabel enjoyed crocheting, collecting dolls, cooking, canning, and baking. She also enjoyed Polka music and dancing with the Polka Club. Mabel was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

Mabel is survived by her four daughters: Barbara (John) Jacobs, Nanticoke, PA; Elizabeth (Tom) Blair, Seattle, WA; Nancy (David) Hageman, Calmar, IA and Debra (Drew) Meyer, Mason City, IA. Nine grandchildren: Brenda (Harry) Wenner, John (Sandy) Jacobs, Jr., Thomas Blair, Timothy (Heidi) Blair, Brian (Heather) Hageman, Christopher Hageman, Brandy Meyer Diop, Yvonne (fiancé, Patrick Eastman) Meyer and Wade Meyer. Nine great grandchildren: Raquel & Bret Wenner, Ashlee, Travis & Nicholas Jacobs, Sophia Blair, Emily & Cole Hageman and Caitlyn Dully. Two great great grandchildren: Serenity & Sebastian. One sister: Bea Frana, Calmar, IA. One sister-in-law: Evelyn Hruska, Verona, WI, and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Mabel was preceded in death by her parents: Frank and Anna (Landa) Pechota. Her husband: Elvin Kubesh on Oct. 1, 2007. Sisters: Margaret (Ludgar Phillips) (Cletus Busch) Phillips Busch, Celia (Joe) Pizinger, Philomenia (Bill) Svestka and Viola (Eldon) Mason. Brother: Bill (Alice) Pechota. Her father and mother-in-law: Ed and Barbara (Janovsky) Kubesh. Two brothers-in-law: Robert (Iona) Kubesh and Eddie Frana. One niece: Mary Jo Novak. Five nephews: Roger Svestka, Alvin Svestka, Donald Pizinger, Gerald Pechota and Jeffrey Mason. One nephew-in-law: Sylvester Opat. One niece-in-law: Ann Pizinger.
