Barbara Louise Baker was born October 9, 1939 in Decorah, Iowa, the daughter of Steve and Emma (Istad) Baker. Barbara was baptized on November 26, 1939 and confirmed on October 24, 1954 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah. She graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1957. Barbara attended Luther College, received her teaching certificate and then taught school in Jesup, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to Arlen Dale Johnson on June 25, 1960 at First Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with two children: Lisa and Stephen.

After their marriage, they moved to Corpus Christy, Texas, where Barbara taught school. She then taught in California, later moved to Colorado, where she taught in several schools in Bailey, CO and Jefferson County. During the summers she came back to Decorah, with her children and stayed at her family farm with her parents. During the summers she took classes at Luther, and she received her BA degree from Luther in Education. She retired from teaching and moved back to Decorah in 2000. Barbara then did substitute teaching in the Decorah schools for many years, until the last school year. She really enjoyed helping with special needs students.

Barbara was raised on her family farm five miles west of Decorah, part of which is now Pinter's Gardens & Pumpkins. She really enjoyed farm life and horses. She was a ‘mom’ to many of her children’s friends. She took them in many times and they stayed with her in her home for periods of time. Barbara loved to read and was in Book Club. She liked to travel and visit her friends. She was very active in helping raise her grandchildren. Her life revolved around her children, grandchildren and their lives. Barbara had an amazing way about her, to be there and help her family out. She had a knack of knowing what you needed, when you needed it.
