Castalia Farmer Dies Of Injuries
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning, July 14, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian for Herbert J. Schrandt, prominent area farmer who died from injuries received in an automobile accident. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. V. J. Peters, assisted by the Rev. Joseph Hsu and the Rev. W. P. Mueller, conducted the rites. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Schrandt was fatally injured when his car was hit by a milk truck as he turned off highway 52 just west of Castalia to take a side road to his home. The accident took place about 11:15 on July 10. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester where he died Saturday, July 11.
Herbert J. Schrandt was born October 29, 1915 at Festina, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Theo. Schrandt. He was married to Florence Torkelson on May 6, 1940 at Dubuque. To this union four children were born, all of whom survive.
The deceased, prominent farmer in the Castalia area, was active in Farm Bureau and 4-H work and presently was a member of the board of directors of the Union Produce Cooperative in Ossian. He obtained his education by attending St. Mary's School in Festina.
Survivors include his wife; four children, Donald, Gerald, Joan and Joyce, all at home; five brothers, Walter of West Union, Hugo of Festina, Cornelius and Theo. of Decorah, and William of Spillville; five sisters, Winifred (Mrs. Wm. Hartman) of New Hampton, Adela (Mrs. L. J. Walz) of Fairfax, California, Eunice (Mrs. Kenneth Krause) of San Jose, California, Wilma (Mrs. Maria Ferrari) and Anne (Mrs. Wm. Wagner), both of San Rafael, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
