Irene Albertson, age 94 of Ridgeway, IA, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at Wellington Place in Decorah, IA.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church in Ridgeway, IA with Pastor Jeff Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ridgeway.

Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 20 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah, where there will be a V.F.W. Auxiliary service at 6:30 p.m. Monday, and on Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m., one hour before the service, at the church.

Gertrude Irene (Hovden) Albertson was born September 15, 1920 to Anton and Alma (Ramstad) Hovden on a farm in Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at the Madison Lutheran Church by Rev. D. C. Jordahl. She attended Country School #4 (Knutson School) in Madison Township through the eighth grade. She worked at the Hummer Café in Decorah and Solar Aircraft in Des Moines during World War II.

She was united in marriage with Earl Albertson on December 9, 1944 at the Madison Lincoln Parsonage by Rev. M. B. Quill. After the war, they moved home and began farming near Ridgeway. They retired in 1984 and moved into Ridgeway.

Irene actively participated at Lincoln Lutheran Church and Peace Lutheran Church including WELCA, Circle, Bible Study, making quilts, teaching Sunday School and worship services. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family playing cards, going to dances, traveling, bowling and watching her grandchildren play sports. She was an avid “Cubbies” fan and an Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan. She loved to cook and make lefse.

Irene belonged to the Ladies’ V.F.W. Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Euchre Card Club and Birthday Club.

Irene had been a resident at Wellington Place since May of 2010.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Herman and Ada Albertson; her siblings: Orville Hovden, Cora (Harold) Grice, Joseph Hovden, Alice (Jack) Callison, Oscar Hovden and Ethel (Bud) Drape; and her sister-in-law, Lucile (Hartvig) Running.

Irene is survived by her husband of 69 years, Earl Albertson of Decorah; her daughter, Wanda (Art) Swestka of Protivin, IA; her grandchildren: Shelli (Chris) Robins of Indianola, IA, Kirk (Cheri) Swestka of Wichita, KS and Stacy Swestka of Cedar Rapids, IA; her great-grandchildren: Caitlyn, Callie and Kyra Robins, Kaleb Swestka, Mykaela, Gabby, Joey San Miguel; her great-great-grandchildren: Elli Jo and Keegan; her sister, Margaret (Stanley) Arneson, sister-in-law, Shirley (Ralph) Arneson, all of Decorah; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Hovden of Minnewauka, ND; and her nieces and nephew.
