Vernon N. Rovang, age 94, of Decorah, IA, died Friday, October 10, 2014 at Barthell O.E.S. Home in Decorah.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, with Rev. Mark Kvale officiating. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Monday, October 13 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at the church.
Vernon Norval Rovang was born on May 14, 1920 at home in Decorah, Iowa, the son of Ben and Lillian (Evenrud) Rovang. He was baptized on May 20, 1920 and confirmed on June 23, 1935 at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. He graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1939.
Vernon was united in marriage to Delores Haugen on her birthday, July 17, 1943, at Springfield Lutheran Church in rural Decorah. This union was blessed with two daughters, Shirley and Betty.
He lived and worked hard on the family farm his whole life. He diligently raised hogs, fed steers, milked cows, and planted and harvested crops. Vernon had a great sense of caring for the land. He loved all animals, and he always had a special cat and dog. He also sold Marlow Milkers, Texaco Oil products and Big Gain feeds.
Vernon really liked baseball. He played on the Nordness and Ossian teams for many years. He was one of the last surviving members of the Nordness team in the Cow Pasture League. Vernon and Dee’s house was the first in the neighborhood to have a television set, and they entertained friends and neighbors to watch T.V. Vernon loved to play Whist, and to dance with Delores, his partner of 71 years. He loved to eat and enjoyed all the neighborhood birthday and card parties.
Vernon cared deeply about his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He loved to be included in the lives and activities of his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Most importantly, he had the gift of gab, and everyone enjoyed his infectious laugh. He liked to tell stories and kid around with people. He treasured all of his friendships and welcomed new ones daily.
Vernon became a resident of the Barthell O.E.S. Home in Decorah on July 18, 2011.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Lorraine McPherson.
Vernon is survived by his wife Delores; two daughters, Shirley (Davis) Johnson and Betty (Bruce) Schuman of Decorah; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren: Darin Johnson, Dakota and Dillan of Decorah, Devin (Carmen) Johnson, Jace and Emma of Decorah, Jarod (Rachel) Schuman, Kennadi, Kelbi and Kooper of Decorah, Jeff (Heather) Schuman, and Aliya of River Falls, WI, and Joelle (Jared) Nielsen, and Maci of Decorah.
