Kim Kolaas, age 60, of Calmar, IA died Friday, August 15, 2014 at his home.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at the Springfield Lutheran Church at 1969 Middle Calmar Rd. Decorah, IA. With Rev. Phillip Olson presiding. Burial will be in the Springfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Monday, August 18, 2014 at the Springfield Lutheran Church.
Kim Arnold Kolaas was born on August 29, 1953, the son of Kenneth and Christine (Johnson) Kolaas in Decorah, IA. Kim attended South Winneshiek Schools and Postville High School, graduating in 1971. Kim worked for Pattison Brothers in Clayton at the grain elevator and for Double L in Garnavillo and Monona, IA, building hog confinements. He was united in marriage to Renee Frye on May 20, 1988, in Clayton, IA, and they were the parents of Kristopher. Kim also worked for Hank Berns Electric in Garnavillo and more recently as a handyman in the Northeast Iowa area. He also fished commercially in Clayton, IA. Throughout the years, Kim loved to fish and ride his Harley. His mind was always full of ideas and enjoyed tinkering with things all his life. He enjoyed playing guitar and refurbished one for him to play.
Kim is survived by his son, Kristopher Kolaas and friend Petronella “Peach” Lusthoff, St. Olaf, IA. His former wife: Renee Frye Kolaas, Garnavillo, IA. His mother: Chris Kolaas, Calmar, IA. One sister: Sherry (Leon) Bachelder, Calmar, IA. Two brothers: Steven (Carolin) Kolaas, Tripoli, IA, and Scott (Melissa) Kolaas, Ankeny, IA. Nieces and nephews: Kelly (Allie) Bachelder, Korey (Kaela) Bachelder, Dustin (Kayla) Kolaas, Kayci Kolaas, Zachary Kolaas, Tyler Kolaas, Kaiya Kriener, Kara (fiancé Kerry Kleve) Hageman, Kiri McLaughlin and Kodie Smith. Seven great nieces and nephews: Ava & Maddisen Kolaas, Emma & Grace Bachelder, Karter Kriener, Savannah O’Reilly and Riley McLaughlin. Special friend, Tami Hageman, Calmar, IA. Brother-in-law: Daryl Schmitt, Fort Atkinson, IA, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Kim was preceded in death by his father: Kenneth Kolaas on Feb. 26, 2005, two sisters: Linda Kolaas in 1955 and Robyn Kolaas Hageman Schmitt on Dec. 17, 2008, one nephew: Kamon Chapman in 1993, sister-in-law: Theresa Kolaas in 2001, nephew-in-law: Pete Kriener in 2013, paternal grandparents: Arnold & Thelma Kolaas, maternal grandparents: Christian Johnson and Bernard & Signe Ehler, and many aunts and uncles.
