Marvin Carl Bergan, 69, of Ridgeway, died Sept. 20, 2003 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after a lengthy illness related to pulonary and respiratory problems.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. at Orleans Lutheran Church with Rev. Philip and Rev. Ginny Olson officiating.

Organist was Judy Hovden, and soloist Rev. Philip Olson sang "On My Heart."

Congregational hymns were "How Great Thou Art," "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "Jesus Loves Me."

Casketbearers were David Bergan, Michael Bergan, Jon Frank, Clinton Hovey, Randy Hovey, Jeff Morris, John Morris and Wayne Tietje.

Interment was in the Orleans Lutheran Cemetery, and Fjelstul Funeral Home of Decorah handled arrangements.

Marvin Carl Bergan was born March 8, 1934 to Carl and Mabel (Kjos) Bergan at the family’s home in Madison Township.

He was baptized in the Christian faith at the Madison Lutheran Church April 14, 1934.

He confirmed his faith at Orleans Lutheran Church in rural Ridgeway April 10, 1949.

Marvin Bergan attended country schools until he entered high school in Ridgeway, graduating with the class of 1953.

He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1962, stationed in Fort MacPherson, Ga., where he was a radio repairman.

He was identified as a sharpshooter and received a Good Conduct Medal for his service.

After serving in the Army, he worked for Reilly’s Painting and then started a business of his own, painting and laying carpet. He painted several barns and churches in the area, including the Madison Lutheran Church.

He also farmed in Winneshiek County for several years.

Marvin Bergan was united in marriage with Maxine Roher Nov. 1, 1968 at the Orleans Lutheran Church. To this union, four children were born: Carl, Dawn, Donna and Charlene.

Marvin Bergan was a farmer and raised his family on a farm located north of Ridgeway.

He was a member of the Orleans Lutheran Church where he served several terms on the Church Council, was a Sunday school teacher and an usher.

Survivors include two children: Carl (Rhonda) Bergan and their daughter of rural Cresco and Charlene (Wade) Beavers and their two children; his stepchildren: Debbie Barger of Indianola, Glen Spalding of Vinton and Kathy Cotant of Cresco; his brother LaVerne (Lois) Bergan of Minneapolis, Minn.; his sister, Ethel Tietje of Marshalltown; his sister, Colleen (Maynard) Hovey of Cresco; sister-in-law Mae Davis; his sister Jean (Jim) Morris of Bristow, Iowa; sister Janet (Joe) Frank of New Brighton and by several family and friends.

Marvin Carl Bergan was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mabel Bergan; his brother, Eldon Bergan; his daughters Dawn and Donna Bergan and his brother-in-law Herb Tietje.
