Obituary
Iowa Plain Dealer July 2, 1885, P3 C5

DIED,
SHELMEDINE.—At Kendallville Iowa, at the residence of his soninlaw W. C. Fifield, Fremont twp. June 14, 1885, D. E. SHELMEDINE, aged 67 years.

The deceased was born December 9th 1817 in the State of New York Courtland CO. Truxton, At fourteen years of age he removed with his parents to Pennsylvania, was married to Miss. Sarah W. Hunter, in 1843. 32 years ago he emigrated with his family and friends to Winneshiek Co. and settled where the town of Kendallville now is, being one of the first settlers.

His beloved wife and companion departed this life seven years ago, leaving him thus to finish his earthly pilgrimage alone.

The deceased was the father of nine children four of whom are still living.

He was a man of pure and unblemished character of unimpeachable integrity, of the most generous nature with his fellow men, and in all the relations of life was the perfect model of a christain{sp} and an honest man the “noblest work of God.”

THE FINISHED LIFE.

If the rough hand of the tempest
Tear away the fresh young leaves,
Our youthful vigor wasted,
Who can wonder if one grieves?

But when from autumn branches
Drop the brown leaves one by one.
It seems as fair and fitting
As the setting of the sun.

The old man by the fireside
Looks back through tender tears,
And says, “with wife and children
I trod long, happy years”

The old man o’er the window
Looks for the city ways,
And says, “success and honor
Were mine in long gone days.”

“I’ve seen the worlds fair beauty:
I’ve tasted all its sweet;
And now past two and three score,
My life is all complete.

The face of her who loved me
Now beckons far away:
I’ve wrought the work God gave me,
Then wherefore should I stay.?”

And who, O Friends, would keep him?
Sound no funeral knell
Say of his life, “T’was blessed”
And of his death, “Tis well.”

Transcriber's Note: The last name is spelled two different ways.
